The Florida Sheriffs Association
today may be very different than the organization that existed in
the early part of the century, but it's just as effective.
FSA means training.
Our association sponsors and provides
a variety of management and technical assistance services. We also
host special conferences and training seminars throughout the year
for both certified and non-certified personnel. Training seminars
deal with topics including domestic violence, drug enforcement,
administrative management, budget, and other law enforcement and
correctional management training.
FSA means Task Forces.
Several of FSA's special task forces
have gained nationwide recognition, including Operation Drug Enforcement,
Operation Medicine Cabinet, and the crackdown on Deadbeat Parents.
FSA's Hurricane Task Force coordinates efforts of all Sheriffs'
offices in responding to the storm-ravaged communities during hurricanes
and other catastrophic disasters.
FSA means legislative and legal services.
We advocate and promote policy changes
in the Legislature that will benefit public safety and the overall
interests of law enforcement. In that important role, we provide
a strong voice for citizens and victims. We also have two staff
attorneys who handle Sheriffs' legal questions about all aspects
of a Sheriffs office. They research and advise Sheriffs on matters
including personnel, administrative and liability concerns.
FSA means early intervention.
FSA founded the Florida Sheriffs Boys
Ranch in 1957. That evolved into the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches,
Inc., an example of our commitment to preventing juvenile crime
and delinquency by guiding youngsters to productive lives as law-abiding
citizens. The Youth Ranches operate four residential child-care
campuses and two camping programs. And, the Ranches provide community-based
services; intensive family counseling; family life education; targeted
case management; therapeutic camping; foster care; and other delinquency
prevention programs to as many of Florida's troubled and neglected
children as funds permit. To date, more than 30,000 youths have
been served.
FSA means awards, networking, fleet management, and more.
We recognize exemplary performance
in law enforcement and law-making at our bi-annual conferences.
These sessions provide an opportunity for Sheriffs to share their
successes, and learn from their peers. FSA has also started a highly-successful
fleet management program that provides each agency with significant
buying power and savings on official agency vehicles - a direct
benefit and effective cost savings to local taxpayers.
