The Florida Sheriffs Association established the statewide Inmate Medical Cost Management program in 2012 as a way to protect Sheriffs' Offices and counties that operate jails from gaps in traditional medical insurance provided for inmates. It has no enrollment fee and sheriffs pay nothing if a discount cannot be negotiated. A similar program saved the sheriffs in Virginia more than $6 million in one year.
Recent cases. To understand how significant the savings, one Florida Sheriff's Office asked the service provider to review a bill that was several years old and he received a 59% reduction in the total bill to the county. In another instance, the provider was able to negotiat a 51% reduction on a bill for an inmate who was treated at an out-of-county trauma center.
How it works. This program gives the sheriffs and/or county access to a statewide inmate medical services network which provides significant savings, up to 61% or more (35%-40% on average) for outside medical services. The program works in concert with the contracts already established for in house medical services, so you can keep your current agreements in place. Learn more. (pdf)
