LGBTI(Q) Population in Confinement Settings

Course description:  The dynamics that exist and staff interaction with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) population are discussed during this workshop as well as how this issue is addressed in the National PREA Standards. The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 was signed into to Federal Law by President George W. Bush. On May 17, 2012, Attorney General Eric Holder signed the PREA Standards and President Obama announced the new law the same day. When sexual abuse allegations occurs in confinement settings an Administrative and Criminal Investigation is initiated by the agency.

Who should attend: Correctional Staff whose duties include “Admission, Classification, Release, Housing, Search," etc. with inmates that are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ). 

Class size:  Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. The class is limited to 25 participants; cutoff date for enrollment is March 14, 2014.

Attire:  Business Casual or Agency Uniform (no jeans, cutoffs, sandals or sleeveless dresses).
