Deputy Nicholas Worthy, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Honored as 2016 FSA’s LEOY

July 13, 2016

The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) has announced that Deputy Nicholas Worthy of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has been selected as the 2016 “Law Enforcement Officer of the Year,” sponsored by Star & Shield Insurance, a proud partner of the FSA and provider of insurance services to members of the public safety community and their families. Worthy was recognized with a Medal of Valor and a Life Saving Award for his heroic actions in two separate incidents in 2015.

In February of 2015, Worthy and two other deputies responded to a vehicle fire at a house in Cocoa. The fire had fully engulfed the driveway and spread to the carport, blocking all entry and exit points of the home. Worthy and the other officers broke a bedroom window to carry the resident occupant to safety.

After a full inspection, it was found that the fire was arson set with the intentions of trapping the occupant inside. Without the heroic actions of Worthy and his colleagues, the victim certainly would not have survived.

Worthy and the two other officers received a Life Saving Bar because of this incident.

On March 9, 2015, Worthy responded to a shooting call near a residential area in Cocoa. When he arrived on the scene the shooter fired at Worthy and hit the passenger side of his car. Remaining calm while the shooter advanced toward him, and after experiencing a double feed weapon malfunction, Worthy found opportunity to fire at the suspect and defuse the threat.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey says, “I could not be more proud of Deputy Nick Worthy for everything he does to protect our community and his heroic life saving actions. He is a shining example of dedication to protecting our citizens with compassion, professionalism and courage!”

Prior to his service with Brevard County, Nicholas Worthy served several tours overseas as a US Army Ranger Sergeant and Team Leader. He was awarded with the Bronze Star Medal of Valor in combat for his heroic actions in Afghanistan.

It is clear to tell that whether serving Brevard County or our Nation at large, Nicholas Worthy is one of the few who are willing to run toward danger instead of away. Because of his dedicated service, he will receive the “Law Enforcement Officer of the Year” award at The Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Annual Summer Conference in July.
