Taylor County Deputy Robert Lundy Honored as the 2015 FSA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year

The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) today announced that Deputy Robert Lundy of the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office has been selected as the “2015 FSA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.” Lundy was recognized at the FSA Summer Conference in Fort Lauderdale for his dedication to law enforcement by risking his life and living out his oath to serve and protect the public.

On February 5, 2014, Taylor County Deputy Robert Lundy was at Timberland Ford in Perry getting his cruiser serviced when, out of nowhere, a car crashed into the dealership and the driver (who was a disgruntled employee) opened fire. Lundy took a shotgun blast to the abdomen from less than five feet away. Somehow, the 32-year-old withstood the shock and pain of shotgun pellets penetrating his liver, colon and lower intestine to return fire and kill the shooter.

Lundy’s bravery and quick thinking saved the lives of two employees who were also shot -- and quite possibly many more.

“Deputy Lundy is a hero,” said Taylor County Sheriff L.E. “Bummy” Williams. “He used his training and did everything right in this situation. I am proud of his courageousness and commitment to the citizens of Taylor County.”

Six months after the shooting and extensive surgeries, treatment and physical therapy, Deputy Lundy is recovering at home -- grateful for all the love and support.
 
He had a stroke in his eye during surgery because of all the blood loss, but has gotten some vision back in a small part of his right eye.

In addition to the internal injuries from the blast, he has nerve damage in both legs. He has gone from being in a wheelchair, to being able to walk on both legs.

Sheriffs’ Offices embody excellence as we make a difference in each of the 67 counties we serve, and we are honored that the brave efforts of Taylor County’s Deputy Lundy were recognized today.”

For his dedicated service, the Florida Sheriffs Association has named Deputy Robert Lundy the 2015 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. During their annual summer conference banquet, Lundy was given a standing ovation from the 500-plus law enforcement attendees and their supporters, in addition to a handsome plaque and a check for $2,000.
