We are devastated by the news that Deputy William Gentry has died after being shot last night while on duty serving his community. Deputy Gentry has honorably served the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office for more than 9 years, currently serving as a field training officer whose contributions will forever have an impact on the agency.
Today, the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) Task Force released the results of Operation Spring Cleaning, a strategic initiative in 35 Florida counties that focused on the investigation and subsequent arrest of those manufacturing, delivering or trafficking controlled substances. During this operation, deputies pulled 4,988 drug traffickers off the streets, confiscated nearly 12.5 million grams of controlled substances, and seized 1,679 firearms in arrests made for unlawful possession.
Today, the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) honored all the fallen deputies and officers who served the law, and state of Florida, in the line of duty. This year, four names were added to the FSA Memorial Wall during the ceremony. FSA President Sheriff Mike Adkinson of Walton County joined sheriffs at the FSA Memorial Wall to celebrate the men and women who lost their lives while serving their communities.
The Sheriffs of Florida stand united with Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Bobby Schultz, and his team today with the tragic news that two of his deputies were ambushed and murdered. The association, as well as surrounding counties, are assisting with the massive law enforcement response. In a family response, we have multiple agencies and sheriffs on-scene in Trenton, Florida. We are humbled by the countless offers of assistance and we grieve together as one family. We ask that Florida continue to support law enforcement and keep the community of Gilchrist county in your prayers.
Today, C.O.R.E. shared new polling data that shows Miami-Dade residents support a key portion of CRC Proposal 6005, which addresses state and local government structure and operation. These results show voters support electing independent constitutional officers.
Moments ago, the Florida Sheriffs Association released the following letter requesting adequate funding for School Resource Officers. This letter was sent to Florida Governor Rick Scott, House Speaker Corcoran, and Senate President Negron. Here is the text in its entirety:
We stand with the victims, families, and law enforcement from yesterday’s horrific attack at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. We cannot comprehend the evil that put this attack in motion and our hearts are broken at the loss of the 17 souls who were taken from us too early during this premeditated act of violence. We will continue to support this beloved community. The Sheriffs of Florida offer our resources to all first responders who are diligently and respectfully working with those who were impacted, and who are investigating and bringing justice for these victims and their families.
